Become an American Red Cross Instructor

STEP 1: First Aid/Adult, Infant & Child CPR with AED ($75) 10 hours

These easy-to-learn, basic emergency procedures will help you respond to sudden illnesses and injuries, breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, infants and children, and learn the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and effectively operate an automated external defibrillator (AED).

STEP 2: First Aid/CPR Challenge ($30) 1 hour

Instructor candidates must successfully complete a pre-instructor course challenge of their basic skills in Adult/Child & Infant CPR, First Aid, and AED. This consists of demonstrating competency in all skills and a written test.

STEP 3: Fundamentals of Instructor Training (No Charge) 4.5 hours

Your career as a Red Cross instructor begins with this overview of American Red Cross history, structure, policies, procedures and activities. You will develop skills to teach with quality and consistency to diverse populations. (No cost; mandatory part of any instructor course)

STEP 4: Lay Responder First Aid & CPR/AED Instructor ($175) 16 hours (2 days)

This course prepares you to teach basic Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED courses to lay responders at work, school or in the community. Candidates will be trained as instructors in First Aid, Adult, Child and Infant CPR, as well as AED use. Course completion certifies instructors to teach all basic level courses in the Lay Responder – First Aid and CPR/AED Programs. These include: First Aid/CPR/AED for the Workplace, Schools and Community; First Aid-Responding to Emergencies; and the Sport Safety Training program. Subject matter reflects the latest in first aid and CPR science as defined in Guidelines 2005 and meets OSHA requirements.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of skills challenge and Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT).
