CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer - When you save lives for a living, only the best training will do! First Aid/CPR Challenge - Individual challenges are held every hour. The session consists of written tests of first aid and/or CPR/AED as well as a demonstration of skills by the participant without instruction or prompting. Babysitting Instructor - This course prepares candidates to teach the popular Red Cross Babysitting course to youth ages 11-up. Lay Responder First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor - This course prepares you to teach basic Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED courses to lay responders at work, school or in the community. Candidates will be trained as instructors in First Aid, Adult, Child and Infant CPR, as well as AED use. Course completion certifies instructors to teach all basic level courses in the Lay Responder - First Aid and CPR/AED Programs. These include: First Aid/CPR/AED for the Workplace, Schools and Community; First Aid – Responding to Emergencies; and the Sport Safety Training program. Basic Water Rescue - This course teaches the basic principles of emergency planning, self-rescue, emergency care and assisting others using non-swimming rescues while maintaining personal safety. Basic Water Rescue is not Lifeguard Training but could help anyone who lives or works around a water site and responds to a water emergency. Ideal for aquatic therapy settings. Meets CEU requirements for AEA and Physical Therapists. |

Course content and activities include: decision making skills, interacting with the public, recognizing and responding to all types of emergencies, equipment–based rescue skills, spinal injury management and other current topics. Successful participants will receive certificates in Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen training. Prerequisites: 1. Minimum of 15 years old. BRING PROOF OF AGE TO FIRST CLASS. 2. Swim 300 yards continuously, using the strokes in the following order:
- 100 yards front crawl using rhythmic breathing and stabilizing propellant kick
- 100 yards of breaststroke
- 100 yards of front crawl and/or breaststroke. This can be a mixture of front crawl and breaststroke.
3. Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a minimum depth of 7 feet, retrieve a 10–pound object, return to the surface and swim back to the starting point, keeping the face above water and holding the 10–pound object with both hands. 4. Stroke Clinics are highly recommended prior to taking the Lifeguard Training course (see page 7). 5. Appropriate swimming attire only. One-piece swimsuits are required for all water sessions. |

Lifeguard Training Challenge - Lifeguard Training Challenge gives individuals the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skill competency for certification or re-certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training/First Aid. A current CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer certification or equivalent is required (present card at the class). A current Lifeguarding certification is recommended. Bring proof of age and rescue mask to class. Successful participants receive a certificate in American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid valid for three years. This class will not re-certify CPR for Professional Rescuer. Participants must come prepared. No coaching will be provided during the challenge. You are responsible for performing skills and knowing information presented in the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training manual. Candidates must successfully complete the following skills:
- Swim 300 yards continuously, using the strokes in the following order: (100 yards front crawl using rhythmic breathing and stabilizing propellant kick, 100 yards of breaststroke, 100 yards of front crawl and/or breaststroke. This can be a mixture of front crawl and breaststroke.)
- 20 yard swim, surface dive to retrieve a 10–pound object, return to the surface
and swim back to the starting point keeping the head above the water and both hands on the 10–pound object.
- Multiple-Victim Rescue.
- Front and Rear head hold escapes.
- Controlling Bleeding.
- Applying both a sling and binder.
- Three Water Skill Scenarios.
- Written Examination (must score 80% in all four sections).

Lifeguarding Instructor Courses - The goal of the Lifeguarding Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach Lifeguard Training (including First Aid), CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED Essentials, Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer, Preventing Disease Transmission, Community Water Safety, Basic Water Rescue, and Lifeguard Management. Eligible candidates may also qualify to teach the Safety Training for Swim Coaches course. NOTE: With an additional orientation, successful Lifeguarding Instructors can teach courses within the American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Prerequisites:
- Be 17 years of age on or before the final scheduled class session.
- BRING PROOF OF AGE TO FIRST CLASS SESSION.
- Pass the pre-course written examination (60 questions) with a minimum of 80%
- Successfully demonstrate CPR/FPR and first aid skills.
- Pass the prerequisite swimming skills test (see page 2 for list of skills).
- Successfully perform the prerequisite rescue skills test and scenarios.

Lifeguard Training Review/Update -
This course is for current lifeguards needing to recertify themselves or lifeguards who need to update themselves into the NEW Lifeguard Training program. The new program has been released and will upgrade the participants into the latest lifeguarding techniques and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) Guidelines. This is a shortened version of the lifeguard class. Due to the release of the new lifeguard training program, the Cincinnati Area Chapter will offer no Lifeguard Challenges or review courses. Those needing to re-certify their lifeguarding will have to register for the update course. Each participant will receive the revised American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Manual.
Prerequisites:
Successfully pass the pre-course swimming skills:
- 300 yards swim (100 yards front crawl, 100 yards breaststroke, 100 front crawl and/or
breaststroke).
- 20 yards swim, surface dive to retrieve a 10–pound object, return to the surface

Water Safety Instructor - The Swimming and Water Safety Instructor program prepares you to instruct American Red Cross progressive swim lessons and teach participants to be safe when they are in, on or around water. This program covers knowledge in a logical progression for aquatic skill development. Back crawl-25 yards, Breaststroke- 25 yards, Elementary backstroke- 25 yards, Sidestroke- 25 yards, Butterfly- 15 yards
- Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
- Tread water for 1 minute.
